Carbon Offsetting

Listen live

As attempts to curb the release of carbon dioxide grow, mainstream New Zealand businesses are paying environmental projects to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Airlines now encourage their passengers to pay an extra fee to offset the effects of their travel. Taxi companies, orchardists and even banks are spending millions of dollars to polish up their green image and do their bit for the planet. But what are the projects behind such schemes, and do they really provide the long-lasting environmental benefits they promise?

Cabs Against Cancer

Finding answers to cancer-related questions will be a little bit easier, thanks to a new partnership between Wellington Combined Taxis and the Cancer Society-Wellington.

From today, 200 Wellington Combined Taxis will be fitted with licence plate surrounds carrying the Cancer Society’s 0800 Cancer Information Helpline 0800 CANCER (226 237).

The Cancer Society’s free and confidential Cancer Information Helpline service is available to anyone with a cancer-related question or concern.  “Although we can't give individual medical advice, we can talk about the effects of specific types of cancer and explain what will happen during processes like chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other treatments, says Fiona Pearson, Manager Support & Information.  In addition our helpline staff can connect callers with cancer support groups and other community resources.  Ms Pearson says “Each contact is confidential and calls can be anonymous.

Wellington Combined Taxis were pleased to support the initiative. “We are very proud to be able to support such a fantastic charity, by using the plate surrounds, we hope we can help spread the message!”

Chairman and Cab driver, John McDonald is especially pleased to be participating.  “It’s great that we have been given the opportunity to help the Cancer Society”.

The Cancer Helpline is staffed by experienced cancer information nurses, who can also assist with referrals to other Cancer Society services.  The Cancer Information Helpline number is 0800 CANCER (226 237) and nurses can be reached Monday-Friday from 8.30am-4.30pm.

For Wellington Combined Taxis Carbon Neutrality is an important part of the ride.

Riding in Style Doesn’t Cost the Earth in Wellington

Two exciting developments in Wellington’s transport sector mean riding in style doesn’t have to cost the earth in the capital.

NZ Bus’ Airport Flyer service has a flash new fleet of buses that comply with the latest European emission standard, Euro 5. According to NZ Bus this means the exhaust emissions are up to 90 percent lower than older buses.

As well as being good for the environment, the new Flyer buses look and feel good thanks to leather seats, air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi. Automatic announcements also make it easy for visitors to identify their stop, and wide doors and low floors provide better wheelchair and pushchair access.

NZ Bus CEO Bruce Emson says the company intends to change the way customers regard public transport.

“We want to create a service that is not only the preferred way to get to and from the airport, but to the city as well – reliable, fast, comfortable and good value for money.”

Meanwhile Wellington Combined Taxis recently became the first taxi company in New Zealand to receive carboNZero certification.

Marketing coordinator Ani de Graaf says the company has been working towards the certification for two years. To achieve the status, they reduced carbon consumption in all areas of the business including fuel usage, electricity in the office and air travel.

Combined Taxis now only purchase hybrid, diesel or LPG cars for the 442-strong fleet. Within six years there will be no petrol-only cars left in the business.
